Foreword........The subject of Ostrich Farming in Australia, presented in printed form, has been sadly neglected. As with many other industries, it has become the accepted norm to search the world for advice and direction rather than using our own unique expertise. This is an attitude that has to be overcome if we as a nation are to successfully compete on the world stage
It is with the foresight and enthusiasm displayed by the author that changes will be made. He has been prepared to do extensive research and also gain practical experience before attempting to put this work to print. No one to date has attempted to compile such a comprehensive work and I can foresee there will be great demand for this work
Michael Hastings comes from a rural background which gives him an insight to the rural industry which many other authors do not possess. He has the feel for farmers, understanding their thirst for knowledge so that they may achieve more productivity from their present enterprises, and at the same time research possible diversifications. He has taken an active part in both the research and practical farming of the Ostrich over a period of a number of years which brings a real balance to the subject, written in a manner easily understood by all
Because this book is aimed at all levels of entry into the farming of Ostrich, the author has very wisely used a number of illustrations so that some who have not had the pleasure to visit an Ostrich farm, will be able to visualise what is being discussed
As the book gives a nice balance of all aspects of the Ostrich, I strongly recommend it to all who have a desire to enter at any level as well as those who would like to have a good reference book in their library.......Stan Thomson, President Australian Ostrich Association Inc. Vic
