Foreword........The idea behind the Costume in Context and People in Costume (for younger children) series is to show clothes worn throughout the ages by people from all walks of life
This volume on underwear is slightly different in that it examines the underwear worn beneath fashionable garments and, of course, until recent times, only the wealthy could afford to be fashionable. Poor people had to be much more practical and would not have been able to work had they been wearing some of the more unusual structures illustrated in this book
Many of the characters from Costume in Context reappear here and you will learn about some of the tortures they endured in order to present a fine outward appearance.
