Anyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, The History and Techniques of the Great Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked, just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and informative captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects, what type of canvas and priming was used, and how the colours were chosen, mixed and applied
Claude MONET was the central figure in the Impressionist movement, one which was to transform painting all over the world and to win a lasting popularity for its exponents. The Impressionists broke away from the accepted historical, religious and mythological subject-matter and painted what they saw around them, landscapes and scenes of everyday life. Monet himself went further, always working out of doors directly from life. He rejected the smooth brushwork favoured by the Academicians of the day, handling his paint in a varied and inventive way so that the textures found in nature are emulated by the marks of his brush. His life as an artist was an unceasing struggle to record the fleeting effects of nature by means of a small palette of pure, bright colours, and he often painted several versions of the same view under different lights, working on four or five paintings in the course of one day
The selection of paintings shown here records the success of his struggle, and traces his development from early works such as Women in the Garden, through the "series" paintings to the last, great Waterlilies panels, painted for the French nation. In the text, the author outlines the major events in Monet's long life and explains the ideas behind his work
